Social Worker
The Grandview C-4 School District believes the role of social work is critical in meeting the needs of today's families. The District social workers supports students, families and district personnel, to identify personal, emotional and social problems that may interfere with school adjustment and promote the student’s academic success.
School social workers work with general and special education students and their families to resolve social, emotional and behavioral problems. This is done through a process of assessment, consultation with school staff and community providers, through development and implementation of behavior management plans, and providing indirect and direct services. In an effort to help students be as successful as they can be, school social workers help to bridge the gaps between school, home and the community.
Here are some of the specific services that School Social Workers provide:
• Participating in special education assessment meetings as well as individual Educational Planning Meetings
• Working with those problems in a child's living situation that affect the child’s adjustment in school. (home, school, and community)
• Preparing a social or developmental history on a child with a disability.
• Counseling (group, individual and/or family)
• Mobilizing family, school, and community resources to enable the child to learn as effectively as possible in his or her educational program
• Assisting in developing positive behavioral intervention strategies.
School social workers can support students who are experiencing social, emotional, physical or environmental difficulties which interfere with their school adjustment and achievement, such as:
• Providing crisis intervention.
• Developing intervention strategies to increase academic success.
• Assisting with conflict resolution and anger management.
• Helping the child develop appropriate social interaction skills.
• Assisting the child in understanding and accepting self and others.
Family services:
• Working with parents to facilitate their support in their children's school adjustment.
• Alleviating family stress to enable the child to function more effectively in school &community.
• Assisting parents to access programs available to students with special needs.
• Assisting parents in accessing and utilizing school and community resources.
The school social worker will assist in linking students and their families to community resources that will best support the needs of the family. These resources could include but are not limited to; food, housing, medical, clothing, substance abuse and mental health.
