good evening and Welcome to our production hour webinar for Community Academy this evening we are very lucky to have Miss Rachel Tucker is the community behavioral liaison with ReDiscover our we also have assisting us this evening with Carla Harris who is the district social worker I am a courtier I am the district coordinator people Services a part of my responsibility is also Community Academy are you guys going to get started I am so just I know Angela already we're just going to cover us just some different struggles and some different positives that we're having and receiving with social media especially this past year and so am I hope tonight is to be able to provide some good information so first you know what's happening with your teen and social media s you know some of the some of the dangers that they may face that's the things that we may not even think about as parents or is as even as far as responsible adults for any of our other relatives so that's my help tonight and so we're going to kind of start with a negative and then we'll end up on a positive but I we're just going to look at some just different numbers now because they're quite staggering but this is me so please feel free to reach out to me call me text me email me with any questions if you have any needs for resources or any anything really you can go ahead and feel free to reach out my role is really to connect people with resources to connect people with adriene he is and support so anything that you would need just feel free to reach out so first of all let's look at the view the overview of social media use so we have is just amazing 4 billion 4.6 billion users online and you know I would guess that this might even be a little bit more because this study was was 2022 this year but every day more and more people are money online platforms we have quite a bit of time is spent in social media 2 hours and 27 minutes a day for the average user I would challenge that and say it's probably play a little bit more with YouTube videos and different series that we watch online on these platforms and with Tik-Tok I know this number is kind of small I think in my opinion so we have a roughly 74% of the population is on social media let's look at it for our team so that's kind of what we're here for 85% 13 to 70 year old 13 to 17 year olds use YouTube so that's quite a big that's quite a large number of Snapchat I know my daughter I use a snapchat just as a text chat forum I bet with her friend 72% are a Snapchat users this number is a little lower than I expected but only 51% are on Facebook and then Tik-Tok users 16 Tik-Tok users are teens when it's kind of become a community platform but also a disbursement of information platform all of these canoes are ways that communication is says instead of texting people are Snapchatting instead of sending video message or video calling people a little short clips on Snapchat or sharing with masses short videos of information on Tik Tok so it's quite quite expensive so let's talk about some of the a bad part of social media usage I know a lot of us have heard and have experienced bullying but bullying on a cyber platform her social platform has a lot of different implications for example that awkward situation that you had in the hallway is no longer in between you and those fiber people it's not video taped and share it across the school it's now not limited to that one time in his reshard over and over and over and sometimes it's posted online 40 what percent of Internet users overall have been cyber-bullied so that's adults and children I'm 21% 21% of miners have been victims I would stink because if you look a little bit further. only 11% of cyberbullying is estimated to be reported so let's think about that that number of 21% victim rate is probably a lot higher because it's not just not being reported for example some of these some of these things are kind of silly are but also very damaging or like Hot or Not Pages which are going across High Schools they're not necessarily trim that but pictures of peers are posted online on the peep on what their opinion is of them and so that's just something to think about like that happens every day or for example arguments or fights are videotaped and then shared throughout the school and even if it extends Beyond School 79% of minors being cyberbullied occurs on YouTube so posting a video sharing those things those moments that we wish we didn't have to relive I know years ago this wasn't an issue these these videos were shared so this is a new thing that we're having to learn and be flexible learn how to deal with so there's also stuff the older a teen becomes like a thirteen-year-old versus the seventeen-year-old the higher the  and likelihood that they are to be cyberbullying I think part of it has to do with access time he monitored the study didn't really identify it but it did identify an upward Trend as as the individual got older we know that the bullying increases some other in in talking about this another way of cyberbullying which isn't thought about very often is online gaming platforms sometimes this is an online live environment where you are paired up with other users and sometimes these users are maybe outside of your circle and sometimes these videos the how you playing a game is recorded and then it's posted online with people picking you apart how much is a form of bullying these are things that you just haven't had to deal with before better coming up more and more now so depression and Social Media so this is an outcome that really like we see trends and the use of social media for adults and children that the at the increase of social media use there is an increase in depression will you know this for across the age group this is especially true for teens especially true for teen girls as well in 2017 there was a study of teen depression showed that a 33% increase of depression 33% increase from 2010 versus 2015 and a 65% increase in female suicide that number is huge so we might ask okay what happened between 2010 and 2015 smartphones the first smartphone came out 1007 go by 2015 92% of teens and young adults had them so this this created a an environment where you were always so when your teen walks into school constantly connected they do not leave school at school school comes with them that person that she's has them in the hall is is with them if you think about that they're on social media there on Tik Tok they're on YouTube so wherever they go they are connected and we are connected we as adults also face this difficulty as well so we kind of can see you know rewind 50 years ago you that's cool hopefully and then you shut that door and so now that that door is not shut so we can we can see you practically how there might be a correlation and just as I said before we can see this in adults as well the more time spent on Facebook the higher rates of depression and they've been looking at this for the last few years and you can see popularity of unplugged Retreats and stuff like that I think that is a way that people are trying to dress is learning how to turn off our smartphones back connection so let's talk about some other things social media I know a lot of you guys have heard about some of the tiktok challenges with her some of them are kind of ridiculous like a few years ago there was a cinnamon challenge where you had to like take a spoonful of cinnamon and dry and try to lie down it or the ice Challenger different things like that but these kind of grown in severely so this past year and there is a link on the resources page that will show you the trends from 2021 to 2022 school year some of these challenges included indecent exposure School vandalism stealing and assaulted behaviors which is really concerned that there would be yeah almost like a mess organization of and mobilization of our teams to go into the school and complete these challenges and then video tape it and post it so probably the most concerning and I know a lot of the parents are aware is the school shooting day which was promoted online on this past December on December 17th promoted on various social media platforms so this is concerning for many reasons I know we just touched on the emotional damage that often times will be carried into adulthood and that is just something that a bullying and our rates of depression we're going to have to deal with that at some point in our lives and our and our kids will as well but other consequences are criminal charges so with assault and was vandalism this is a crime and I know in chances and they're just various articles where school districts were putting out there that if he's if these crimes were committed these Tik-Tok challenges were committed that they would take them seriously and there are some news articles there can be easily found on that as well additionally School discipline this is something that the school is responsible for the safety of other child something that they have to address when when these behaviors are when these behaviors happen on school grounds and not as well as physical and emotional harm cell phone. harm the people that are around the person I'll participate in these things this this is also a self-harm behavior when you think about it because it puts you in a position that is a vulnerable or dangerous and just not not safe when you go and try to resolve somebody that's not a safe Behavior or participating in some of these different activities aren't aren't safe so ramifications are community-wide there's just some some memes to lighten the mood we can't talk about social media without talking about showing a meme so let's touch briefly on the good of social media and then we'll kind of our do review a little bit social media is really bad connection let's just think back to 2020 and all the difficulties that many of us face and being disconnected from family and loved ones and people on our lives were going to Rebel social media really was a Saving Grace during that time because we were able to hop on Facebook messenger and talk to her family member in the best face-to-face contacts that we could have our Zoom and we were able to keep in touch with our loved ones and see what was happening in their lives by what they post it online or hear their voice and see their face when they sent a Snapchat messages or other communication that social media is has a lot of good value an information is as fast as our internet connection like we can find information that we couldn't find before just by going online and weeding at through different resources and trust and articles and stuff like that anything that we want to learn we can find and that is just such a one saying that we don't and I don't often think about is that I can go online and learn a skill or teach myself about something that is completely outside of my frame of thinking saying is that we all come from different cultures and different backgrounds and we get to share that with everybody online we get to share pieces of ourselves with those around us and we can also learn about other cultures and become more well-versed in and being culturally minded about learning and appreciating all those around us and then our learning isn't is it limited we no longer have to have different we can go and we can spend an hour online and learn about whatever we want to learn and then we can do it again the next day we don't have to worry about another person schedule another person we can learn all these things end I know that we talked about connection being a negative but it is such a positive thing when used in a healthy way with healthy boundaries we are always we can always be connected with those we love those who live across the United States or across the world so let's talk a little bit about ways we can support our teams or are you going shelves because we also as adults are heavy users of online social media and it's it's really about modeling and balance and so let's talk a little bit about that sometimes I think we forget we trade off communication and connection one for the other but it's important to remember that face-to-face connections with those around us are still very important and creating opportunity and times to to be able to do that in our house there are some really good with tools I didn't put this in here but there are some really good tools online if their struggle with this they have as you go on Amazon they have conversation cards the conversation can cars that you can use with your kids like that just a topic you can draw topic out of a deck and then kind of talked about it another fun one is they have emotions so if you really want to Foster talk about emotions in your house there's an actual Jenga game that you pull out the block and it you have to talk about whatever emotion that is a lot of tools that Foster connection and lot of resources that Foster connection the best way to cease bullying is to block them so to empowering your teens and yourself to block those we make them feel less than or who are graphing them is really important power did to turn it off that is a Perko's social media connection so another thing is this is is creating that openness in conversation in the home and just being aware not afraid to ask questions don't be afraid to ask you or your children how they did how they see how they're feeling at how they're doing or online interactions I say it's a good a good thing to keep a pulse on what's happening in their lives online another important notice just to always report bullying when and report it to school administration and school counselors make those who are supporting your child aware that this is happening encouraging them to do so to sometimes I think it's hard because we sometimes might be for a victim of something we sometimes take that on ourselves blame ourselves for that and that's the same for people who are being bullied they sometimes blame themselves and it's hard to become vulnerable and let people know that they're being evicted to that but it's also really important to report trying to keep everybody on the loop there are a just a ton of apps and moderating Technology that's available right now for parents to use this will allow for you to know what is happening on the taxes in your house so there are a few phone apps and there are a few different integrative things that connect browser that will that will limit time but also that will keep you in the loop of what's what's happening there's one that's called a bark that one has pretty high rating it even goes to the point of kind of letting you know about text messages or anything like that and it can be kind of used as a flag and it's a soldier and a lot of these things are either free or very low cost and there are some there's a resource page with that information on how to get connected to these  another tool is phone free time it's good for us to to put our phones down or to just set aside times whether that's like dinner time if it's practical or just evening time or whatever it might work for your schedule but set aside times where you're not connected to your smartphone and dark not not connected to the smartphone when chip that was good I think is really good it is before bedtime is really crucial time to not be connected to your phone for many reasons there's the Sleep implications but there's also just setting aside that time for own Mental Health and also modelling that habit for our teens and children this that we can turn off these things at night sometimes I know it's been mentioned to you maybe Chucky alarm clock check the phones in that are so they're not taking their phones to bed at them cuz you know the Tik Tok scrolling we all know how that is or the difference Instagram scrolling and stuff like that it's easy to get caught up in so there's all these different things there's also online support groups for parents I think one of them's called parents helping parents but the link is also shared but that's a good support crew to get in and it's all virtual you can do virtual or you can do it's like a natural thing that you can search so those are that's a good option to just get connected with support get connected with and don't be afraid to use these apps and set boundaries this is just chance and without aspects inspire quote these are some of the resources I used and feel free to look him up there's a lot of data and studies being done especially recently on some of these topics as many people are just facing the same challenges with the excessive use of social media or the difference just trying to navigate the challenges of keeping our kids ourselves safe online a lot of these things are accessible just by just kind of looking up and doing your own research and don't be afraid to ask questions and let me put let me put my contact information back up on the screen just so you can take a picture of that with your phone and start my information and just feel free to text me or call me another thing that I really encourage is getting families connected to therapy when needed on school counselors are in most of our schools and they're just such a good resource and they really do care and they are available for teens to talk to if you want connection with support for yourself and have questions about that or concerns about that you can reach out and just shoot me a text or call me and can't help that you connected I work for me to stay over but I'm not biased towards we discover if you feel that there's something that works better for you just let me know don't don't worry about the agency I work for I'd rather get people help then get check on a specific place so just let me know and I can see what we can do so
