CAIR's Focus Program WINS Battle of the Brains KC

CAIR's Focus program edged out 820 exhibit ideas to win the grand prize in the Burns and McDonnell Battle of the Brains competition. The competition is one of the biggest Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competitions in the metro area and beyond. The CAIR Focus program is set to receive a $50,000 grant and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to build a $1 million exhibit at Kansas City's Science Center! "Our goal is to not only spark an interest in STEM, but to light a fire for a career in STEM," says Ray Kowalik, chairman and CEO of Burns and McDonnell. "That's why winning the competition is just the beginning. Now, the Grandview students get a front-row seat working with our researchers, architects, construction managers, and engineers. By the time we open the exhibit, they will understand what it takes to bring their vision to life." Grandview's winning proposal explores STEM from a human health perspective. It dives deep into a very complex topic, the brain, and uncovers how it controls literally everything we do as humans. One part of the brain tests your memory - while another regulates motor movements. The exhibit idea is an engaging discovery of how the brain affects our five key senses: taste, touch, hear, smell, and vision. This year, participation in Battle of the Brains grew by nearly 60-percent, reaching record levels: 7,000 students 400 teachers 820 submissions 250 schools 55 school districts 75,000 online votes

  • 2:53 Mock Crash a Sobering Experience for Grandview High School Teens before Prom Featured



    Every two years, Grandview High School staff and emergency responders stage a mock crash for the juniors and seniors just prior to prom. The goal of a mock crash is to educate teenagers and young adults about the tragedy of traffic crashes — and to reinforce the importance of seat belts, paying attention behind the wheel and to show the consequences of distracted driving and drinking and driving. By giving teens a realistic visual of the effects of drunk driving, the staging of a mock crash hopes to steer teens away from impaired/distracted driving.
