At district convocation, this year part of our message to staff included all that we wanted to accomplish by the end of this school year and in the future of this school district. This summer Board of Education members set two goals for our district to accomplish. One, to build positive relationships with all students and families. And two, for all students to be on grade level in each academic subject. To capture the immortal words of John F. Kennedy, we don’t set these goals as a district because they are easy, but we set them because they are hard. And I will add “because our students deserve it!”
This topic reminds me of how people throughout history have been making bold predictions of the future, some of which came true and some that did not. This year our country celebrated the 50 year anniversary of the first moonwalk. There were not many people in the world that thought the USA would be able to accomplish this goal. But ...there was a singular mission. To walk on the moon. As JFK said, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”
This school year, our students will see many changes to various school sites. This includes new bathrooms at three different school sites: Conn-West, Belvidere and Grandview High School. We have also renovated our tennis courts at Grandview High School to ensure our students are safe and can continue to compete at a high level. As you may have noticed, we have also been hard at work on the upgrades to the Grandview High School stadium. Our new video scoreboard is up and ready to go. This scoreboard will be connected to our new press box and all new stadium seating! We are excited about these upgrades and hope our community is proud for years to come. Be on the lookout for details on our website www.grandviewc4.net of our ribbon cutting and first game! We hope that everyone in the community will come out to support the Bulldogs.
Our staff has also been hard at work around expanding the college and career readiness opportunities our students have access to throughout the district. We started several years ago ensuring more students were exposed to a variety of careers. Our upper elementary students are now given the opportunity to have career exploration to begin this process. That exploration continues in middle school and has been tied to our high school. This year, we are fully implementing our pathway model in high school. My goal is that EVERY student will have a path once they graduate. That path might be onto college, trade school, military, or immediately working in a career field. But again, EVERY student. Our freshman last year began this process and we will push this even further this year by expanding the opportunities our seniors have with various market value assets including college credits, internships, mentors, job shadowing, etc.
The work that our staff is doing in this district is amazing. With our newly completed strategic plan as our guide, we will continue to support our district mission of “preparing ALL students to be college and career ready through high-quality instruction and meaningful relationships”. As always, we remain committed to our community, to our parents, and to our students and will continually strive to partner together toward the goal of educational excellence.
